Bali, Indonesia

Quick answer

  • Split your time between two bases: Ubud for culture and nature, and a beach area such as Uluwatu, Seminyak, Sanur or Nusa Dua.
  • Don't miss the sunset Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple, the Tegallalang rice terraces and a day trip to Nusa Penida.
  • Traffic is slow, so use a driver for day trips and wear a sarong at temples (most lend or rent them).

Ubud and central Bali

Ubud is Bali's cultural heart. Walk the Sacred Monkey Forest, the Campuhan Ridge path at sunrise and the Tegallalang rice terraces before the tour buses arrive. Bathe in the holy springs at Tirta Empul, and see traditional dance in the evening.

Waterfalls such as Tegenungan and Tukad Cepung are easy half-day trips, as are cooking classes and yoga.

Temples worth the trip

Uluwatu Temple sits on a clifftop above the ocean; stay for the Kecak fire dance at sunset. Tanah Lot, on a rock in the sea, is also best at sunset. Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is on a lake in the cooler highlands, and the "Gates of Heaven" at Lempuyang are famous but often have long queues for photos.

Mount Batur sunrise

Guided treks up the active volcano start in the early hours, around 2 to 4 a.m., to reach the top for sunrise over Lake Batur and Mount Agung. The climb takes about two hours and is suitable for reasonably fit beginners; bring warm layers.

Beaches and islands

Uluwatu has surf beaches and cliff-top bars, Seminyak and Canggu have beach clubs and cafés, while Sanur and Nusa Dua have calm water for families. Fast boats from Sanur reach Nusa Penida, with its dramatic Kelingking Beach viewpoint and snorkelling with manta rays, in under an hour.

On the north-east coast, Amed and Tulamben are excellent for diving and snorkelling, including the USAT Liberty wreck close to shore.

Before you go

Foreign visitors pay a Bali tourist levy, which can be paid online before arrival; check the current amount and your entry requirements. On Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence in March, the airport closes and visitors must stay in their hotel for 24 hours.
