Quick answer
- Choose Barcelona for Gaudí's architecture, city beaches and a big, buzzing food and nightlife scene.
- Choose Lisbon for lower prices, a laid-back feel, hilltop viewpoints, historic trams and easy trips to Sintra and the coast.

Sights
Barcelona is defined by Antoni Gaudí: the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Book timed tickets for the Sagrada Família and Park Güell in advance. The Gothic Quarter and El Born are wonderful for wandering.
Lisbon is a city of viewpoints (miradouros), tiled facades and steep lanes. Ride historic Tram 28 through the Alfama, see the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, and watch the sunset over the river.
Beaches and day trips
Barcelona has city beaches such as Barceloneta, a short walk or metro ride from the centre, and a warm Mediterranean sea in summer. Montserrat's mountain monastery is about an hour away.
Lisbon's beaches are a short train ride away along the coast to Cascais, but the Atlantic is cooler. Sintra's fairy-tale palaces, about 40 minutes by train, are the best day trip of either city.
Food and nightlife
Barcelona has tapas, seafood, Catalan cooking and some of Europe's best restaurants, plus late nights in bars and clubs. Lisbon is known for grilled fish, custard tarts (pastéis de nata), affordable wine and fado music in small taverns.
Cost and practical tips
Lisbon is generally cheaper for food and drink, though hotel prices have risen in both cities. Both charge a tourist tax per night on accommodation.
- Pickpockets target busy areas in both cities, especially Barcelona's Las Ramblas and metro, and Lisbon's Tram 28. Keep valuables in a zipped bag.
- Lisbon's hills are steep and its pavements slippery; bring comfortable shoes.
- Lisbon is on the same time as the UK; Barcelona is an hour ahead.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lisbon cheaper than Barcelona?
Usually, yes, especially for food and drink. Hotel prices in both cities rise sharply in summer and around big events.
Which is better for a beach holiday, Lisbon or Barcelona?
Barcelona, because its beaches are right in the city and the Mediterranean is warmer. Lisbon's beaches are a short train ride away on the cooler Atlantic.
Can you visit Lisbon and Barcelona on one trip?
Yes. Direct flights between them take about an hour and three quarters, so a week split between the two works well.
