Quick answer
- In Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the cherry blossom usually peaks from late March to early April, with full bloom lasting about a week.
- The blossom moves north through spring: Okinawa blooms from late January, Hokkaido not until late April or early May.
- Official forecasts for 2027 start in January and are updated weekly, so book flexible hotels now and fix the exact days later.

How the cherry blossom season works
Japan's best-loved cherry tree, the Somei-Yoshino, opens its first flowers and reaches full bloom about a week later. Full bloom then lasts around a week before the petals fall, so each city has a window of roughly ten days to two weeks that looks its best.
Exact dates change by up to two weeks from year to year depending on the winter and early spring weather. That is why you should plan by region and use the forecasts rather than fixing on one date a year ahead.
Typical bloom dates by city
These are typical ranges for full bloom based on long-term averages. Warm years come earlier, cold years later.
- Okinawa: late January to February (a different, deep-pink variety).
- Fukuoka, Kagoshima: late March.
- Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima: late March to early April.
- Kanazawa, Takayama: early to mid April.
- Sendai: mid April. Hirosaki Castle: late April.
- Sapporo and Hokkaido: late April to early May.
Using the 2027 forecasts
Japanese weather companies such as the Japan Meteorological Corporation and Weathernews publish their first cherry blossom forecasts in January and update them every week until the blossom arrives. The Japan National Tourism Organization also publishes a forecast page in English.
If your dates are fixed, choose a route that follows the blossom: start in Kyushu or Tokyo in late March and travel north, or add Hokkaido if you are there in late April.
Best places to see the blossom
- Tokyo: Shinjuku Gyoen (a calm, ticketed garden), Ueno Park (lively hanami parties), the Meguro River (lanterns at night) and Chidorigafuchi, where you can rent rowing boats beside the Imperial Palace moat.
- Kyoto: the Philosopher's Path, Maruyama Park's weeping cherry, Arashiyama and Heian Shrine. Go at sunrise to beat the crowds.
- Osaka: the grounds of Osaka Castle and the Expo '70 Commemorative Park.
- Further afield: Himeji Castle, Mount Yoshino near Nara with thousands of trees on its slopes, and Hirosaki Castle in the north.
Booking tips
Cherry blossom season is the busiest time of the year in Kyoto, and hotels fill months ahead. Book a room you can cancel now, then adjust once the forecasts are out.
Golden Week, a run of public holidays from 29 April to 5 May, is the busiest week for travel within Japan. Avoid it unless you are heading to Hokkaido for its late blossom.
Frequently asked questions
When is cherry blossom season in Japan in 2027?
In Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka it usually peaks between late March and early April. Exact 2027 dates will be forecast from January 2027.
How long does the cherry blossom last?
Full bloom lasts about a week in each place. Because the blossom moves from south to north, the whole season in Japan runs from late January in Okinawa to early May in Hokkaido.
Is it worth going to Japan if I miss the cherry blossom?
Yes. Late cherry varieties, plum blossom in February and wisteria and azaleas in late April and May make spring beautiful even outside peak bloom. Autumn colours in November are just as popular.
