What's on at Edinburgh's Christmas?
The main Christmas market fills East Princes Street Gardens below the Old Town skyline, with food, mulled drinks and gift stalls. Visit in the afternoon for easier browsing, then come back after dark for the lights. Rides and attractions, some on George Street and in West Princes Street Gardens, have their own tickets and dates.
For a separate evening out, Christmas at the Botanics is a light trail at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, with timed tickets.
How do you plan Hogmanay 2026?
The Torchlight Procession on 29 December winds through the city by firelight, and you need a ticket to join it. The Street Party on 31 December fills the city centre with stages, crowds and fireworks over the castle at midnight; it needs its own ticket and is separate from the concert in Princes Street Gardens.
Buy tickets only through the official Edinburgh's Hogmanay website, and check age limits, entry gates and bag rules. Book your accommodation and dinner at the same time as your tickets, and ask your hotel how road closures will affect getting back.
What are the best things to do in Edinburgh in December?
Visit Edinburgh Castle early in your stay, then walk the Royal Mile past St Giles' Cathedral to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery are excellent indoor options on wet days.
For short walks, try Victoria Street, Stockbridge and Dean Village on the Water of Leith; cobbles can be slippery. Climb Calton Hill for city views on a clear day. With short daylight hours, plan one booked attraction and one neighbourhood each day.
Where should you stay?
The New Town, around George Street, is convenient for the festive sites and restaurants. The Old Town puts you close to the Royal Mile, but expect steep streets and late-night noise. Stockbridge is quieter, and Leith has great restaurants but is further from the celebrations.
At Hogmanay, a practical route back to your hotel matters more than a central label, and many hotels have minimum stays. Book Christmas Day meals separately, as staying at a hotel doesn't guarantee a table.
Which winter day trips are worth it?
- Stirling: its castle and old town, about 45–60 minutes by train.
- North Berwick: a seaside town, about 35 minutes by train.
- South Queensferry: views of the three Forth bridges, about 15–20 minutes by train to Dalmeny, then a short walk downhill.
- Highlands day tours: long days on the coach in winter, so choose them only if you enjoy the drive.
Tips for a winter visit
- Allow three nights for the markets, the castle and neighbourhood walks; for Hogmanay, arrive by 29 December.
- Pack waterproofs, warm layers, gloves and shoes with grip: Edinburgh's hills and wind matter more than a festive outfit.
- On Christmas Day most transport and attractions close; check services around New Year too.
