Quick answer
- Choose Cancún if you want more to do: cenotes, Mayan ruins, island day trips, nightlife and the widest choice of flights.
- Choose Punta Cana if you mainly want to relax at an all-inclusive resort on a long, palm-lined beach.
- Both are best from December to April and both can be affected by sargassum seaweed in late spring and summer.

| Best months | December–April for both |
| Passport | Needed for both |
Beaches
Punta Cana's coast, including Bávaro and Cap Cana, is one long stretch of soft sand and palms, with most resorts right on the beach. Cancún's Hotel Zone has bright turquoise water; the north-facing beaches near Isla Mujeres are calm, while the long east-facing stretch can have strong waves. Further south, Playa del Carmen and Tulum add more beaches along the Riviera Maya.
Things to do
This is where Cancún wins clearly. Within a day trip you can swim in cenotes, visit Chichén Itzá and Tulum's clifftop ruins, ferry to Isla Mujeres, snorkel the reef at Cozumel or go to eco-parks such as Xcaret.
Punta Cana's highlights are catamaran trips to Saona Island, zip-lining, golf and the Hoyo Azul swimming hole at Scape Park. Most visitors spend most of their time at their resort.
Resorts and value
Both have hundreds of all-inclusive resorts, from family-friendly to adults-only. Punta Cana often has lower prices for similar resorts, and many are large, self-contained complexes. Cancún has more choice outside resorts, including hotels in walkable Playa del Carmen and boutique stays in Tulum.
Getting there
Cancún has one of the widest choices of nonstop flights from US cities, and it is about two hours from Houston and Dallas. Punta Cana is about two and a half hours from Miami and four from New York. Both need a valid passport for US citizens.
Before you book, check the US State Department's travel advisories for Mexico and the Dominican Republic, which cover each region separately.
Weather and seaweed
The dry season runs from December to April in both places, and hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. Sargassum seaweed can affect beaches in both destinations from about April to September; the amount changes a lot from year to year and from beach to beach.
