No passport needed
Puerto Rico is around four hours from New York and two and a half from Miami. Old San Juan's colorful streets and forts, the El Yunque rainforest and bioluminescent bays make it far more than a beach stop, and you can pay in US dollars.
The U.S. Virgin Islands are just as easy. St. Thomas has the most flights and shopping; St. John, most of which is a national park, has some of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean and is a short ferry ride away.
Best for beaches and calm water
Turks and Caicos is about an hour and a half from Miami and three and a half to four hours from New York. Grace Bay on Providenciales is a long, powder-white beach with water that stays calm thanks to the offshore reef.
Aruba lies south of the main hurricane belt, so it is dry and breezy all year. Eagle Beach and Palm Beach are lined with resorts, and the island is around four and a half hours from New York.
Best for all-inclusive value
Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, has dozens of large all-inclusive resorts along a long stretch of beach, often at lower prices than its neighbors. It is around four hours from New York.
Jamaica's Montego Bay and Negril pair all-inclusives with reggae, waterfalls and some of the region's best food. Barbados, around four and a half to five hours from New York, is calmer and more polished, with excellent rum shops and restaurants.
Short hops from Florida
From Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Nassau in the Bahamas is around an hour's flight, which makes it ideal for a long weekend. On the mainland, Cancún and the Riviera Maya in Mexico sit on the Caribbean Sea and have the widest choice of flights from across the US.
When to go and when to book
The dry season runs from December to April. The busiest and most expensive weeks are Christmas and New Year, Presidents' Day week and spring break in March. Early December and late April offer the same weather at lower prices.
Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk from August to October. If you travel then, choose flexible bookings and consider travel insurance.
- All islands except Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands require a valid passport for US citizens.
- Check your passport's expiry date well before you book; some countries require it to be valid for several months after you travel.
