Weather decides most trips
The two islands have opposite good seasons. Phuket, on Thailand's Andaman coast, is driest from November to April; from May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and rough seas, and some beaches fly red flags.
Bali's dry season runs from roughly April to October, which lines up with Gulf school summer holidays. November to March is its wet season, with heavy afternoon showers.
Getting there
Emirates and Qatar Airways fly nonstop to both islands from Dubai and Doha. Phuket is the shorter trip at around 6 hours, which matters with small children. Bali (Denpasar) takes around 9 hours.
Beaches and hotels
Phuket's west-coast beaches such as Kata and Karon have soft sand and calm water in high season, and many large family resorts sit right on the beach.
In Bali, Nusa Dua and Sanur have the calmest water for children, while Seminyak and Canggu are known for surf and beach clubs. Bali's strength is private pool villas, often good value for larger families.
Halal food and culture
Phuket has a long-established Muslim community, so halal restaurants are easy to find across the island. Bali is mainly Hindu; halal food is widely available in tourist areas, but you will need to look a little harder outside them.
