Weather decides most trips

The two islands have opposite good seasons. Phuket, on Thailand's Andaman coast, is driest from November to April; from May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and rough seas, and some beaches fly red flags.

Bali's dry season runs from roughly April to October, which lines up with summer school holidays in the northern hemisphere. November to March is its wet season, with heavy afternoon showers.

Getting there

From Australia, Bali is a short hop: about 3.5 hours from Perth and 6 to 6.5 hours from the east coast. From Europe and North America, both islands usually need one stop, and Phuket is normally the shorter journey via hubs such as Bangkok, Doha or Dubai. From the Gulf there are nonstop flights to both, and Phuket is the shorter one.

Beaches and hotels

Phuket's west-coast beaches such as Kata and Karon have soft sand and calm water in high season, and many large family resorts sit right on the beach.

In Bali, Nusa Dua and Sanur have the calmest water for children, while Seminyak and Canggu are known for surf and beach clubs. Bali's strength is private pool villas, often good value for larger families.

Food and culture

Phuket mixes Thai, Chinese and Muslim influences, with night markets and seafood everywhere. Bali is mainly Hindu, with temple ceremonies part of daily life, and the cafe scene in Canggu and Ubud is one of the best in Asia. Both islands make it easy to eat vegetarian, halal or child-friendly food in tourist areas.

Our verdict

Pick by your dates first. For a trip between November and March, Phuket wins on weather. For June to August, Bali wins on weather and villas. If you are flying from Australia, Bali also wins on flight time.
