| Trip length | 7 nights |

| Best months | Mar–May, Oct–Nov |
| Fly into | Tokyo (Haneda or Narita) |
| Fly out of | Osaka (Kansai) |
| Getting around | Shinkansen + IC card |
Days 1–3: Tokyo
Land in Tokyo and keep the first day light. Base yourself near a major station such as Shinjuku, Shibuya or Tokyo Station so the subway does the hard work.
Children love teamLab, the Ghibli Museum (book weeks ahead), Ueno Zoo and a day at Tokyo Disney Resort. Asakusa and the Senso-ji temple make an easy first morning.
- Buy a rechargeable IC card (Suica or Pasmo) for trains, buses and convenience stores.
- Taxis are expensive; trains are fast, clean and stroller-friendly at most stations.
Day 4: Hakone and Mount Fuji views
Take the train to Hakone for a night at a hot-spring inn. On a clear day the lake cruise and ropeway give classic views of Mount Fuji.
Many traditional inns serve fixed set meals, so tell them about any dietary needs when you book.
Days 5–6: Kyoto, with a half day in Nara
The Shinkansen bullet train reaches Kyoto in a little over two hours from Tokyo. Visit Fushimi Inari early in the morning before the crowds, then Kiyomizu-dera and the Gion district.
Nara is under an hour from Kyoto by train. Families come for the friendly deer park and the giant Buddha at Todai-ji.
Day 7: Osaka
Finish in Osaka for street food in Dotonbori, Osaka Castle and Universal Studios Japan. Kansai Airport makes it easy to fly home without going back to Tokyo.
Food for every diet
Japanese food is a highlight for most children: ramen, sushi, tempura and convenience-store snacks. Vegetarian, gluten-free and halal options are easiest to find in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, and restaurant apps let you filter for them.
Dashi fish stock is used in many dishes, so ask if you need to avoid fish or meat; carrying a translated allergy card helps.
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?
Since the pass price went up in 2023, a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip like this one is often cheaper with single Shinkansen tickets. Compare both before you buy.
