Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered 14 days of self-quarantine for passengers coming from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or New Orleans. He also added California, Florida, Washington State, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroitand Miami. Highway checkpoints are set up at the common border of the states to gather forms from the Louisiana drivers.
Governor Abbott said the Texas Department of Public Safety will enforce them “at and near entry points from Louisiana.” The restrictions do “not apply to travel related to commercial activities, military service, emergency response, health response or critical infrastructure functions.”
Abbott said there is “plenty of hospital capacity” to cope with the statewide coronavirus outbreak, and existing hospitals remain the “primary location” for treatment. He said more than doubled the number of hospital beds are added to the existing capacity for coronavirus patients across the state in the past week, with more than 16,000 beds free as of Thursday.
